Ukraine to create a brand new national flag airline

Today the President of Ukraine announced the creation of a national flag carrier. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine and Airbus was signed in Kyiv. The name of the future air company is Ukrainian National Airlines (UNA).

What we know so far

According to Interfax-Ukraine, the government of Ukraine considers the possibility in future purchasing or leasing 22 passenger jets from the European aerospace industry giant. Particularly, it may be the following types of commercial aircraft:

  • 6 narrowbodies (Airbus A220)
  • 12 narrowbodies Airbus (A320 family)
  • 4 widebody aircraft (A330/A350 family)

Also, the document determines the next steps towards partnership in creating an aviation hub in the territory of Ukraine and even collaboration in the aerospace industry.

From idea to reality

Mr. President commented on the country's aspiration:

"Being apart from the promises, we move on to the practical implementation of the idea - this is our national airline, its creation will be officially launched today. We are ready to invest in the fleet, load Ukrainian manufacturers, and involve world leaders in joint projects in aircraft construction".

It's worth to mention that Ukraine already has an airline that is considered the national carrier - Ukraine International Airlines that was founded back in 1992 as an international airline of independent Ukraine by the Ukrainian State Association of Civil Aviation.
